Building a Home that Promotes a Healthy Lifestyle

Building a Home that Promotes a Healthy Lifestyle

We all periodically resolve to live a healthier lifestyle, but finding the motivation to follow through on our resolutions can be challenging. Most of us get into a routine from which it is difficult to change. For this reason, psychologists have found that one of the easiest ways to change our behavior is by changing the environment in which we live. Since moving into a new home is a radical change in environment, it is the perfect time to make design choices that will help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you want to design a log home that helps keep you healthy, here are some ideas to consider.

Choose a “Walkable” Build Site

Although we love log homes, it is important for your health to get outside the home and exercise frequently. One way to encourage this is to build on a site that is close to amenities like stores and restaurants. If you walk or bicycle to stores rather than taking a car, you will naturally exercise as part of your daily routine. If you chose to build in a rural area, then picking a site with lots of easily accessible trails is a great way to encourage you to get outside and move around.

Grow Your Own Produce

Eating a balanced diet is an important part of staying healthy, but produce can be difficult to shop for. Often, produce will only stay fresh for a few days before spoiling. To encourage yourself to eat more vegetables, consider growing them yourself. Even a small garden of around 100 square feet per person can feed you throughout the growing season. By growing your own vegetables, you can harvest them at their peak and have better food than you could buy. Also, not only will you get exercise gardening, you will actually eat more vegetables since you won’t want your hard work to go to waste.

Build a Kitchen You Will Use

Although eating out is fun, we tend to prepare much healthier meals when we cook it ourselves. If you have a kitchen that’s a pain to use, however, it can be difficult to motivate yourself to cook. When you are designing your house, make sure you design a kitchen that works for you. This doesn’t mean you need commercial-grade appliances, although those can be nice. The most important goal is to have a layout that works for you and that makes cooking and cleaning dishes as pleasant as possible.
