Green Gables: A Log Home on the Little Red River

Green Gables: A Log Home on the Little Red River

It’s no secret that log homes and the outdoors go hand-in-hand. So many of our customers love the outdoors, whether it’s hiking, hunting, biking, fishing…the list goes on. The location of this log home, adjacent to the Little Red River, in one of Arkansas’s blue-ribbon trout streams, is no exception.

The Koon family had always been fascinated with the beauty of a “real” log cabin home, whether nestled into the side of a mountain or next to a river. They began to look for the perfect site to build their dream log home and found it tucked at the end of a long road in Heber Springs, AR. With the park-like features and serene river, it was love at first site.

Now that they had chosen their land, it was time to find their perfect home to put on it. The Koons have a large family, so the home needed to be designed with function at the forefront. They began researching log home companies and looking for floor plans when they found Real Log Homes’s Stonington and knew this was the log home they were looking for!

The plan was open and perfectly set up to host a large crowd. With 4 total bedrooms and a loft that was spacious enough for bunk beds, it met all their needs.

Visitors are welcomed into the home through the kitchen and informal dining space. An informal entry is accessed from the garage directly through the laundry/mudroom where shoes and coats can be conveniently left. Also located on the first floor is an office with a connected full bath, making this room’s use even more flexible. With such a large family expected for gatherings, we wouldn’t be surprised if the office often gets converted to an additional sleeping area. Continuing the tour of the first floor, an expansive master bedroom includes a large walk-in closet and spacious ensuite.

On the second floor, the loft is also perfect for a home office, play area, or, as the Koon family decided, an additional sleeping area with bunk beds. There are 3 more bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms on this floor as well. Two of the bedrooms share a bath while the third could easily be considered a second master bedroom since it includes its own private bathroom.

In addition to the overall layout of the home, the homeowners added several special features to make the home truly unique. A king post truss using ten-inch logs creates an impressive and welcoming approach to the home. A soaring 27’ fireplace in the great room framed by large windows makes for impressive views both inside and outside the home. The oversized antler chandelier, Aspen log stair railing, and hand-scraped wood flooring all add to the rustic quality of the home.

One of the final touches was the Sherwood Green scalloped roof which is what led to the home’s name.

“We decided, after looking at all the beautiful gables on the cabin, that we would rightfully name our gorgeous home along the river, where we plan to make many family memories for years to come…Green Gables,”  Walter Koon.
